Mozambique: Cyclone Idai Response

Cylone Idai slammed into the coast of Mozambique, Africa, causing catastrophic flooding and wind damage—impacting more than 2 million people. The coastal city of Beira was hit hardest with over 90% of the buildings affected. Here's how you can help.

Pastor Daniel and his wife, Grace (shown above with Roberto Welzel), survived Cyclone Idai by standing in chest deep water for three days awaiting rescue. Now they are partnering with ReachGlobal and the Evangelical Free Church of Brazil missionary, Roberto Welzel, to minister to their community when so many people are asking questions as to why this has happened.

On March 10, 2019, Cyclone Idai made landfall near Beira, Mozambique. With it, the storm brought torrential rains, with some areas receiving as much as 24 inches and 100+ mph winds. In the Buzi District, the water rose fast—an inch per minute in places—and the currents were sweeping people away. Roberto reported that another missionary worker was seeing this, and, with the help of others, he fastened a rope across the torrent. This "life-line" was instrumental in saving many lives, as people grabbed hold of the rope and pulled themselves to safety. That worker now has over 200 people—who have lost everything—living communally in his backyard through aid resources he's able to obtain. Roberto said, "But many others throughout the area have little access to food, clothing or medicines."

Amid the huge physical needs, Roberto said, "Pastors we are partnering with are also seeing people with huge spiritual needs. Many in their communities are trying to make sense of what's happened. They are asking 'why did this happen? What did we do to make the gods angry?', and it is opening the door for gospel conversations about the One True God."

There is an opportunity to reach out with Truth and in love. A mission field has been created in the wake of this devastaing crisis.

What does response look like?

ReachGlobal, in partnership with AMEL—the mission agency of the Evangelical Free Church of Brazil—is responding to Mozambique and the devastating aftermath of the cyclone. Initial funds are already being sent from ReachGlobal Crisis Response Partner Initiative to help with the immediate relief efforts. Roberto has invited ReachGlobal Crisis Response to join him on the ground in Mozambique to help develop a longer term strategy for integrating a healthy response to the crisis along with intentional disciplemaking best practices.

How can you help?

  • For Roberto, Pastor Daniel and other church leaders engaged in offering Hope and Truth.
  • For God to be glorified through the storm as pastors and missionaries share the truth about the One True God.
  • For wisdom and discernment for the leadership of EMEL, the mission of the Evangelical Free Church of Brazil, and ReachGlobal as they develop a long term strategy for this response.
  • For health for the survivors, especially the pastors as they minister to their communities.

Cyclone Idai has impacted over 2 million people. For that reason, we are asking you to prayerfully consider giving toward the goal to raise $150,000 for long term recovery, outreach and development efforts.
