Ministry description

Ministry purpose

To proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ, to teach the Word of God, to cast a vision for growing our church and making disciples, and, together with the other elders, to provide overall leadership for the church.

Serving relationships

The pastor serves under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the other elders. He collaborates with the other elders on spiritual direction and overall strategy; he works closely with the deacons regarding operational matters.

Qualifications

Educational and professional requirements

  • Master of Divinity from an accredited seminary, preferably one known to have a reformed theology focus
  • Ordained by the EFCA or another evangelical denomination

Experience preferred

  • Two to five years in a vocational ministry role (pastor, associate pastor, youth pastor) OR
  • Second-career minister recently out of seminary seeking first or second pastoral position

Responsibilities

  • Plan and lead worship services: Prepare overall service order, collaborate with music leadership, and lead the observance of communion and baptism
  • Prepare and preach sermon series with a primary focus on exposition of books of Scripture; preaching may be shared (e.g., rotated) with other pastoral staff
  • Develop strategies, lead and actively participate in our involvement in fulfilling the Great Commission and particularly in outreach to our local community
  • Along with other elders, support and develop leaders of various ministries with particular emphasis on outreach and small group ministries (“heart groups”)
  • Actively engage with our missionaries and work with the elders and deacons to formulate and grow our missions initiatives (both locally and globally)
  • Visit and minister to congregants in homes, nursing care facilities and hospitals
  • Conduct counseling sessions as appropriate, perform wedding ceremonies and conduct funeral services
  • Oversee, along with the other elders, all church discipline matters and the management of conflict issues in the church
  • Proactively communicate with the congregation via whole church gatherings, small group meetings and one-on-one meetings
  • Adhere to the church bylaws and policies and procedures adopted by the church
  • Pursue a vital and wholesome personal relationship with the Lord through personal Bible study, prayer and other spiritual disciplines
  • Build relationships with other churches and pastors in the EFCA and with other gospel-centered churches in the central Ohio area (e.g., Greater Columbus Gospel Coalition)
  • Balance ministry and family priorities
