Czech Republic
Located in Central Europe, the Czech Republic is a new country with an ancient history that includes leadership over the Holy Roman Empire, religious wars, a fledgling interwar democracy, communist-totalitarian persecution and recovering free-market economy.
Spiritual Condition
The 2005 Eurobarometer Poll records that the Czech Republic is the second least religious country in Europe with only 19% of Czechs believing in a god. The 2001 census listed 59% of the population claims to be agnostic, atheistic or non-believing. Only 2.5% of Czech profess to be Evangelical Christians.
The Czech lands and people once knew spiritual highlights:
- A reformation call by the priest, Jan Hus, about 100 years before Martin Luther
- A brief period of religious freedom for Catholics and Protestant believers
- The first Protestant missionary movement led by the Moravian Brethren in the 18th century
Today, Czechs are basically ignorant of the message of the Gospel. Although the beautiful Charles Bridge in Prague has a prominent statue of the crucifixion, few Czechs know the purpose for Jesus’ substitutionary death.
Pray that the ReachGlobal team and our partnering Czech churches and ministries can reach the Czech people with the truth of Jesus Christ’s saving grace.
