Spiritual Condition

Christianity was introduced into Austria in 788 A.D. after the area was conquered by Charlemagne. Austria continued to be a major power player in Europe as a part of the Hapsburg dynasty, and later the Austro-Hungarian empire. During the Hapsburg rule, Austria reverted back to Catholicism in the counter-reformation. Even though secularism has become more popular in recent times, Austria remains strongly influenced by Catholicism.

Today, almost 80% of Austrians still claim an affiliation with the Catholic church, but few would be considered practicing. In fact, recent polls have revealed that only 8% of Austrians attend church. It is estimated that only 1 in 200 people know what it means to have a relationship with Christ.
