Mukti Women's Training Program Grand Opening
On April 20, we cut the ribbons across the entrance of the doorway and entered the brightly lit room. It was opening day of the Mukti Women’s Training Program. The room was lined with sewing machines and floor mats for seating. Following introductions, traditional garlanding, and opening prayer, Rachel, Mukti leader, addressed the women who were starting in the training program.
“Sisters, This day is from God…The God whom we serve is a living God who loves us very much. I give my thanks to God who selected this day long ago for inauguration of our training center.”
After the brief program, the Mukti team and new trainees sat around in an informal circle on the floor, getting to know one another and looking at potential sewing projects they would learn to make.
Prayer fulfilled
According to Rachel, the launch of this training program is a fulfillment of years of prayer for God to open a door to meet the needs of trafficked women and sex workers in West Bengal. The training program is now operating five days a week in a rented room in a village area where there is extreme poverty. Poverty combined with proximity to national highway routes results in the exploitation of women locally and a high prevalence of young women trafficked to city brothels throughout India.
The goal of the six month Mukti Women’s Training Program is to provide an alternative for women entrapped in the sex trade or at high risk of being trafficked.
The training equips the women in sewing, literacy and math, and basic health principles.
The practical training combined with the love of Christ and the life transforming message of the gospel brings freedom, hope, and new life to these women.
How you can get involved
Monthly prayer and financial partners are urgently needed. Prayerfully consider making an investment in the life of a woman. Two dollars a day covers the cost of training for one woman in the program; $60 covers the monthly cost for training one woman; and $360 for one person’s training costs for six months.
