Japan: Cafe Co En Opportunities
Looking and planning ahead
Do you want people to know Jesus? How about in Japan? At the Sapporo ministry center, called Café Co-En, short-term and long-term volunteer help is needed year-round to assist ReachGlobal staff.
Why
To develop healthy communities of believers.
How
By Loving people, Evangelizing, making Disciples and Sending those people out to do the same (LEDS) the café, English classes, photo club, counseling, outings, karaoke, crafts and music all create opportunities to build friendships naturally. When the Japanese have seen Christ’s love, they are often more ready to hear the Good News of Jesus. For those who want to know more about Jesus, Bible studies and worship times are held each week.
Who can volunteer?
People age 20 and older in good health who love Jesus, love serving others, and are supported, encouraged and prayed for by their local body of believers.
What do volunteers do?
Some volunteers work in the café serving drinks, cooking lunch and baking. Others teach English or Bible classes (or a combination). Volunteers are encouraged to use the gifts God has given them to connect with people. Café Co-En can benefit from people with almost any interest. The cafe ministry can use communicators, bakers, builders, artists, teachers, musicians, singers, nature lovers and craft folks.
How long do volunteers stay?
Short-term volunteers stay from two weeks to three months. Long-term volunteers stay from three months to one year or more.
How many hours do volunteers work?
A normal schedule is four to eight hours a day, five days a week, either in the café or English center (or a combination). Not included are worship, lesson planning and optional group activities.
Where do volunteers live?
Café Co-En has a one-room efficiency apartment connected to the English classroom and cafe by lock-able doors. Two short-term people can live there. Longer term volunteers can live in apartments close by.
What about larger teams?
Café Co-En can accommodate short-term teams of up to four people with a team leader. Alternate housing and ministry opportunities are available.
What can teams do?
In addition to (or other than) café and English work previously listed, teams can hand out fliers; do prayer walks; host parties for children or adults; organize music events; lead discussion groups; teach craft or other classes. There’s room for creativity.
What transportation is available?
Subway and bus stations are a two minute walk from Café Co-En. There is also a bus to and from the airport. A cycling and walking path run right behind the café.
What are the costs?
Airfare is from $1,000 to 1,500 from the USA to Sapporo. Living costs run about $20 per day.
Can Cafe Co-En help with any costs?
For those staying three months or more, Café Co-En can consider assisting with travel and room costs.
