Roofing and Relationships
A Team Leader’s Perspective on God’s Timing
God gave me the privilege of serving once again in Alabama. For two weeks, I helped put a roof on a church member’s house. Charla and Dan’s home suffered roof damage due to the tornado. Dan was stationed in Iraq shortly before the tornadoes struck and Charla has been trying to get everything back in order on her own. A team from North Carolina made good progress on the roof. God provided beautiful weather and willing hands to push ahead on what was a very complicated roof.
The real work was the relationships. During the week, the team was able to spend time talking and sharing with Charla. With her husband away and her daughter at college, she didn’t have many people around on a regular basis with whom she could talk. By spending the time intentionally talking with her, there was mutual encouragement to her and the team.
One of the team members also had the chance to talk with a satellite maintenance guy, who had to remove the satellite so the roof could be redone. The team member spent time listening to him and sharing the gospel while they were up on ladders, working.
The seed has been planted in this man’s heart and now it’s time to pray and ask God to make it grow. The next week my patience was tested when rain delayed the team from Maryland, who was to continue working on the roof where the North Carolina team left off. But through it all, God had timed it perfectly, down to the last minute on Friday, when the roof was finished! During the rain delay on the roof, the team blessed the church by starting to paint their sanctuary and a few other odd jobs. God stretched me and taught me that all will work out in His timing.
