Bin-Busting Harvest

America’s amber waves of grain are standing tall and full out in southwestern North Dakota, yielding one of the best wheat crops to come around in a long, long time.

Some parts of the southwest winter wheat growing region are yielding a bin-busting 70- to 90-bushels per acre.

Joe Breker, of Rutland, brought his equipment and crew over from the Red River Valley to help. Ray Bieber, of Mott, watched Breker’s crew fill bins on the farmstead. “It’s the first time these bins have been full this early in August,” Bieber said.

Over at the Southwest Grain Terminal elevator in Taylor, manager Jim Bobb said the price of winter wheat, $5.30, is based on phenomenal demand. Spring wheat sold for $5.60 a bushel Friday, and if a guy wanted to cross his fingers and wait until December, the Minneapolis futures were showing $6.55 a bushel.
