Quebec, Canada: The Power of Reproducible Training

In Quebec, an unreached people group on doorstep of the U.S.(the Québécois) is considered the least evangelized major people group in North America. ReachGlobal staff originally went to Montreal, Quebec, in 1987.

A new wave

Disciplemaking among the Québécois has been difficult, but the gospel is taking hold and the impact of the resulting churches is taking hold. Some are taking their place on the front lines identifying and training a new wave of church planters as the result of the work of the ReachGlobal team in Montreal.

Quebec 2010 Church Planting Boot Camp6th Boot Camp, 12 more trained

With the help of Roger, a former EFCA missionary to the Congo and Quebec, the sixth annual Church Planters Boot Camp was presented in the French language. Roger reported, “We finished well with the 12 attendees learning and being encouraged in their goals of planting new churches… These workers return to their ministries in their respective churches. It’s exciting to think about what the Lord is going to do through them for the Kingdom of God!"

Examples of success

Two of the Boot Camp presenters attended in 2007. Today they have a thriving church of about 120 believers in Quebec where the average attendance for a Protestant church is 40 people.

In 2005, Jay (ReachGlobal personnel) facilitated the training in Cap Haitian, Haiti, to equip leaders from the Northern Haiti region.

Jay noted, "All the teachers for the courses came through the Boot Camp and some of them use our material… One church that sent their pastor to attend with two young planters has gone from 300 in attendance to 700 in attendance and now has two church plants. Their third church planter was with us this past Boot Camp (2010)…   The thing just keeps growing and expanding, and I am certainly not holding the reins. It is bigger than what we are doing. But we did get a chance to be there in the beginning, thanks to help from George (Klippenes).”

Quebec Church Planting Boot CampTraining contributes to multiplication

George Klippenes, director of EFCA StartChurches for EFCA ReachNational, launched the Quebec Church Planter training in 2004. The following year it was translated into French and adapted for greater relevance and fruitfulness. Today Quebec has its own version of the Boot Camp, and the training is part of the ministry of Church Planting Canada (CPC). Jay coordinates the boot camp and serves as CPC Director for Quebec while he leads the ReachGlobal team in Montreal. Several denominations have developed their own training from the material they received at the Quebec Boot Camp.

Praising God for the continuing results

As the result of what started in 2004:

  • Seven Boot Camps have been facilitated in Quebec, six in French.
  • There are 15 Boot Camp presenters (most have gone through the Boot Camp and now help teach it).
  • A brand new concentration in church planting is offered at the Fellowship Baptist seminary.
  • Sixty students attended a new church planting course at a Quebec Bible Institute in the spring of 2010.
  • Another course on church planting and growth has launched at the Pentecostal Bible School.
  • Two Catholic priests joined the 2010 Boot Camp training.
  • Over 200 participants have been trained in church planting since 2004 (including those who have adapted it for their ministry).
