Hope for West Africa
Most of Sierra Leone is Muslim, and Liberia has five major unreached tribes. David, Church Planting Director for ReachAfrica, describes the spiritual plight of West Africa: "The rate at which whole people groups are turning to Islam and animism is alarming in West Africa… Extreme poverty at the grassroots level is providing opportunities for Islam, animism and Cults to lead people away from the truth. In Liberia alone, Islamic organizations and Cult groups are lending more material assistance to villages and towns than any Christian organization is doing. This is how most people groups are turning away from Christ."
Yet, God is bringing hope. In April of 2007, EFCA ReachGlobal missionaries gathered outside Nairobi, Kenya, with leaders from several African Partner Church movements for training and mutual encouragement. However, God had bigger purposes in mind.
The Lord began to lay on the hearts of the African church leaders their responsibility to reach Africa with the gospel. One of them shared, "It is our job as African Christians to reach Africa’s unreached people." They heard and courageously accepted God’s call to raise up a generation of African church planting missionaries.
Some of what God has done since then:
In 2008, Nubako from the Congo D.R. became President of ReachAfrica and David from Liberia became its Church Planting Director. A missions strategy emerged and three Sub-Saharan unreached countries were chosen for the initial missionary thrusts.
In 2009, these two men visited locations in three Sub-Saharan countries to explore the land and build partnerships for the training and sending of indigenous African missionary church planters.
They also launched the first Multiplication Church Planting Training (MCPT) in Togo in partnership with T-Net International. Nubako shares: "We spent time together clarifying missions vision and talking through plans to reach the 38 unreached tribes in Togo."
In 2010, five Liberian church movements are joining hands to reach their country for Christ. They will train full-time workers and lay people in "Multiplication Church Planting" principles and skills. When possible, evangelism and compassion ministry will operate hand-in-hand. This training will be launched in January 2011.
The Evangelical Free Church of West Africa sent a missionary church planter to neighboring Sierra Leone, a largely Muslim country with many unreached people groups. Two churches are presently being planted and they have plans to start an educational ministry. In December 2010, MCPT will be launched there as well.
Big, bold vision
The launching of Multiplication Church Planting Training coupled with Holistic Ministries is a big, bold vision for a new missionary organization such as ReachAfrica. Why does ReachAfrica believe God will bring it to pass?
- It is consistent with the character of God and His love for the peoples of West Africa.
- It is done in obedience to the Great Commission He left us (Matt 28:18-20).
- It reflects the desire of Jesus expressed in John 17 that his children work together in His vineyard.
- It is an extension of what God is already doing. It is clearly His work and He will see it to completion.
ReachAfrica is looking for many partners who share these principles and a heart for the unreached peoples of Africa.
