Why does our church staff need disability insurance?
Disability insurance replaces a portion of your employee’s income if they become disabled and are no longer able to work. Often, a congregation feels responsible to meet their employee’s financial needs during a disability but is prohibited from doing so because of budget constraints.
The EFCA offers an affordable group long-term disability insurance plan to pastoral and support staff of EFCA affiliated churches and organizations. In today’s economy, many individual’s financial reserves have been reduced. For life’s unexpected moments, group long term disability insurance makes good sense and is more valuable than ever.
Current salary figures calculate the salary replacement amount in the event of a disability. Many standard disability plans do not consider a pastor’s housing allowance to be a part of their salary. The EFCA’s plan does!
Two options for premium payment are available for the church board to choose. If the church offers the insurance as a staff benefit, then the employee’s disability benefit would be taxable. If the premium is paid by salary deferral (pretax income), then disability benefits would be declared tax free to the employee. These premium options do not need to be the same for all staff classes or employee groups within the church.
Benefits include:
- 60% of salary replacement benefit (for salaries up to $120,000)
- spouse disability coverage of $1500/month for up to 24 months
- partial disability and severe disability benefits
- rehabilitation and return to work assistance
- survivor benefit
