What Is Ecclesiastical Endorsement? Ecclesiastical endorsement is the Church's affirmation that a person in chaplaincy is performing (or will perform) a valid ministry that represents the Evangelical Free Church. An endorsement is based on evidence of calling, training, and experience in ministry. It also signifies that a candidate: (a) is a minister in good standing with the EFCA; (b) has completed appropriate training for the specialized ministry; (c) has appropriate pastoral or ministry experience; (d) is placed or is seeking placement in an approved ministry setting; and (e) will maintain accountability with the Church.
Why the Need for Ecclesiastical Endorsement?
The EFCA is committed to placing only qualified persons in fields of chaplaincy and requires Ecclesiastical Endorsement policies. Endorsement is:
- Required by virtually all government agencies that hire chaplains
- Required by many private organizations that employ chaplains.
- Required for membership and certification in virtually all professional associations.
- A demonstration of the chaplain's commitment to professional competence and accountability to the mission of the Church.
Who Receives Endorsements?
Endorsements are issued only to individuals who qualify for appropriate ministerial credentials and to selected qualified persons who are serving in correctional, educational, healthcare, seminary education leading to ministry, military and other settings. A preliminary endorsement is issued to Chaplain Candidates who meet the requirements of the Student Candidate program.
